In an Airbnb-turned-study, we perform as intellectuals: reading, discussing, and writing, while eating, excreting, sleeping, and having sex. Through an unserious essay writing process, we challenge the stereotypical image of the “serious” intellectual. While intellectuals construct a credible image to legitimize their knowledge-making, we ask: can the “unserious” also produce knowledge? The four-channel video splits into two parts: a screen recording of Google Doc essay-writing, which is disrupted by daily needs and desires documented in three security camera feeds. The essay itself defies standard structure and citation styles. We cite unverified sources, pause for sex, and adopt a Reddit-style format. The essay, 40+ annotated sources, a fake JSTOR page, and a paid press release present our take on intellectual packaging. What happens when we strip away this packaging? Does it still contribute to knowledge?
